Ian was a long-time member of the Victorian Goldfields Railway. In the latter organization, he often manned the Bendigo Rd crossing at Maldon in the early days. He served in later roles as the station attendant/station master at Muckleford and then in the gift shop at Castlemaine when services were extended there in 2004.
