‘The Walking Dead’ Premiere Review: A Human Drama Set In A Horrific World

‘Days Gone By,’ the first episode of AMC’s zombie apocalypse drama The Walking Dead, was one of the most captivating series premieres I’ve seen in years.

Like most genre fans, I love zombie movies. I love the scares, the chases, and especially the gory kill scenes that seem to get more creative and disturbing with every new release. Last night’s premiere was loaded with that stuff. The Walking Dead doesn’t shy away from gruesome zombie violence, but it has a lot more to offer than bloody kill shots and reanimated rotting flesh.

Morning Blast: ‘Stargate Universe,’ ‘The Dark Tower,’ ‘Smallville,’ ‘Fringe,’ and More

OMFGeez! It feels so good to be surfing the Internets again! An evil, evil beastie called Tropical Storm Hermine blew threw my town this week and killed my connex for almost two days. Two days! That’s like centuries for someone who depends on this infinite series of tubes to make a living. But the modem lights are flashing again and all is right with the world, so let’s get back to business — here’s all the hot nerd TV news you need to know about this mornin’:

- I’m counting the days until David Hewlett reprises the role of Rodney McKay on next season of Stargate Universe. Hewlett and Robert Picardo (Richard Woolsey) will guest star on episode 15 of season 2, airing sometime in the second half of 2011. In a new interview, Hewlett says the writers have done a “really good job” of working McKay and Woolsey into the ep. [Gateworld]

- And speaking of SGU, here are a bunch of photos from the season 2 premiere, airing Sept. 28. [Spoiler TV]

- Universal is making a movie trilogy and a TV show based on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. The films and the show will be closely linked, and Ron Howard has signed to direct the first flick and the show’s first season. [THR]

- Aquaman, Aka “that guy who talks to fish,” is heading back to Smallville this season. Alan Ritchson will reprise the role. [Ausiello]

Morning Blast: Jim Parsons, ‘The Walking Dead,’ Sam Raimi, ‘True Blood,’ and More

Lookin’ for a quick dose of nerd TV news to spice up your breakfast? We’ve got ya covered …

- CNN says Jim Parsons is the hottest geek on the web. (Apparently they’ve never met Felicia Day, Chris Hardwick or Mr. Wil Wheaton.) CultureMap.com, a site from Parsons’ hometown of Houston, says he’s “up there with Beyonce and Lady Gaga,” and fans recently made him an international trending topic on Twitter — not bad for a guy who doesn’t tweet. He’s also inspired a site that sells the many geek-themed T-shirts he wears on The Big Bang Theory (my fav is ‘The Wesley Crushers’ T). [CNN]

- Kristen Bell is trying to drum up support online for a Veronica Mars movie again. Couldn’t hurt to join the Facebook group. [Vulture]

- Bryan Cranston, the greatest entertainer of the right now, will host Saturday Night Live on Oct. 2. [THR]

- Speaking of great entertainers, vegan police squad member Thomas Jane is campaigning for a guest spot on The Walking Dead. [IGN]

- Sam Raimi is producing a show for CBS called Lancaster about a Scotland Yard detective who joins the LAPD. [Deadline]

‘The Walking Dead’ Gets a Second Season, and Robert Kirkman Defends Zombies

UPDATE: AMC just renewed The Walking Dead for a second season. I know season one hasn’t even aired yet (it premieres Halloween night), but I still feel like celebrating. Production on the 13-episode second season kicks off in February, which probably means we’ll see it premiere next summer. So let’s celebrate … by watching a sobering interview with creator Robert Kirkman …

Zombies are people too! And they deserve the same level of respect and mass market adoration that vampires are getting nowadays. At least that’s one of the messages I gleaned from this awesome Wired interview with Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. Stream it below to find out more about AMC’s adaptation of his epic comic book series and why the show will make you very, very sad (hint: people die).
