Brad Wright On The End of ‘Stargate Universe’

(Originally posted @ mikemoody.net)

Stargate Universe is over. (Sadness.)

Syfy aired the show’s final episode on Monday (read my recap for AOL TV), and its pretty clear that the franchise won’t be bouncing back for at least a few years. It’s a shame, since SGU was only starting to find its legs as a compelling, ambitious, arc-driven sci-fi drama, and Stargate was one of the most consistently entertaining sci-fi brands of the last decade. Here’s hoping it’ll return some day in some form, and when it does, I hope I’ll be here to write about it again.

I interviewed Stargate Universe co-creator Brad Wright and star David Blue about the series finale for a recent AOL TV feature. Below you’ll find text from a follow-up email interview I conducted with Wright about the show. The interview features Wright’s answers to specific questions about the finale that I didn’t use for the AOL feature in order to avoid giving away spoilers. Enjoy, Stargate nerds:

TV DeathRay Podcast 5: The Future of Syfy, ‘SGU’ and ‘Battlestar Galactia’

This week, Mike and Jason welcome Michael Hinman of Airlock Alpha to talk about the cable network that TV nerds love to hate — Syfy!

We here at TV DeathRay have a love/hate relationship with Syfy — we love a lot of the network’s shows (like Stargate Universe, Warehouse 13 and Eureka), but we hate its trend of edging out serialized sci-fi dramas in favor of reality shows.

In this episode, the boys discuss the cancelation of Caprica and the future of Stargate Universe and speculate on what the new Battlestar Galactica prequel, Blood & Chrome, will look like once it hits the air.

Listen up, Stargate Universe fans! This week’s TV DeathRay podcast features a new interview with David Blue, who plays Eli Wallace on the Syfy series.

TV DeathRay’s Mike Moody chatted with David about season 2 of SGU, the differing fan reactions to the show, and about his future projects — which David says could include a collaboration with David Hewlett of Stargate Atlantis. Exciting! Stream or download the cast below and send us some listener mail at contact@tvdeathray.com. (Don’t forget to check out a text version of the interview soon at Aol’s TV Squad.)

‘Stargate Universe’ – ‘Cloverdale’ Review @ TV Squad

I’m covering Syfy’s Stargate Universe for AOL’s TV Squad this season. My review of the latest episode, ‘Cloverdale,’ was posted earlier today. Click the link below to read and comment, and feel free to discuss the episode in the comment thread at the end of this post.

‘Stargate Universe’ Season 2, Episode 5 Recap

Here’s an excerpt from the review:

Last night’s episode of ‘Stargate Universe’ offered a bit of a departure from the show’s usual ultra-serialized storytelling style. Instead of watching the Destiny crew dealing with the ongoing problems and challenges of season 2 — Rush’s attempts to control the ship, taming the Lucian Alliance prisoners, drowsy aliens — we got a stand-alone story about Lt. Scott and his trip to Oz the town of Cloverdale.

‘Stargate Universe’ – ‘Awakening’ Review @ TV Squad

I’m covering Syfy’s Stargate Universe for TV Squad this season. My review of the latest episode, ‘Awakening,’ was posted earlier today. Click the link below to read and comment, and feel free to discuss the episode in the comment thread at the end of this post. (You can catch up with all the season 2 eps on Hulu.)

‘Stargate Universe,’ Season 2, Episode 3 Recap

Here’s an excerpt from the review:

‘Awakening’ was full of exciting discoveries as Destiny came across an Ancient seeder ship and its otherworldly inhabitants. But the episode’s brutally slow pacing and tranquil tone dulled the excitement of discovery.

It’s a problem we’ve seen before on ‘Stargate Universe.’ Sometimes the show simply comes off too slow, gloomy and bleak, even when exciting stuff is happening.

‘Stargate Universe’ – ‘Aftermath’ Review @ TV Squad

I’ll be covering Stargate Universe for TV Squad this season. My review of the latest episode, ‘Aftermath,’ was posted earlier today. Click the link below to read and comment, and feel free to discuss the episode in the comment thread at the end of this post.

‘Stargate Universe’ Season 2, Episode 2 Recap

Here’s an excerpt from the review:

Dr. Rush reminded us about his distrust for people and his penchant for keeping secrets by refusing to share his latest discovery – Destiny’s command center/bridge – with the rest of the crew. His arrogance put the away team in danger when he dropped Destiny in range of a dangerous planet that could provide a much-needed source of food and water. Just as Rush was whining about why Col. Young wasn’t fit to command the ship, his dead wife (A hallucination? A vision created by the ship?) reminded him that his mistakes had put people’s lives at risk.

Young and Rush are eventually going to have to confront their demons, find a way to work together and to gain the trust of the crew if they want everyone to survive out in the far reaches of space.

TV DeathRay Podcast: ‘Stargate Universe’ Season 2

In order to comply with Internet law, we’ve recorded the first-ever TV DeathRay podcast!

In our first episode, TV DeathRay editor/nervous introvert Mike Moody and contributor Jason Hughes welcome Darren Sumner, the editor of Gateworld, the biggest Stargate fan site on the Internet, to talk about the season 2 premiere of Stargate Universe. Unlike we puny humans, Darren is privy to all kinds of juicy info about season 2 of SGU. He was kind enough to share his opinion on the premiere, preview the new season for us, and to chat about his site, which has been serving Stargate junkies for more than ten years.

We’re a little shaky on the structure, and we’re still trying to smooth out a few kinks with the recording tech, but we hope you enjoy the podcast despite all the pops and hisses that creep up every now and then.

Stream or download the podcast below, and remember — IT’S THE FIRST ONE! We’ll fix the bugs and learn how to run a proper podcast eventually, I promise!

‘Stargate Universe’ – ‘Intervention’ Review @ TV Squad

Yep, it’s another Stargate post (Don’t worry folks, reviews of other shows, including No Ordinary Family, The Event and Dexter, should be posted soon).

I’ll be covering Stargate Universe for TV Squad this season. My review of the season 2 premiere, ‘Intervention,’ was posted earlier today. Click the link below to read and comment, and feel free to discuss the episode in the comment thread at the end of this post.

‘Stargate Universe’ Season 2, Episode 1 (Season Premiere) Recap

Here’s an excerpt from the review:

Similar to last April’s standout mid-season premiere, the season 2 opener of ‘Stargate Universe’ delivered plenty of suspenseful edge-of-your-seat moments and emotional character drama.

The premiere wrapped up last season’s swell of cliffhangers, but it also left us with a million new questions, most of them concerning TJ (Alaina Huffman) and the fate of her baby.

Interview: David Blue Previews ‘Stargate Universe’ Season 2

I spoke with David Blue of Stargate Universe recently about the show’s second season (premiering tonight on Syfy) and the history of the Stargate franchise for a post I wrote for TV Squad.

You’ll find the full interview below. We talked about his favorite episode, the challenges of season 2, and the new developments in store for David’s character, Eli Wallace. (Don’t forget to check out my interview with SGU co-creator Brad Wright).

Mike: I’m a big fan of the show, and I’m really looking forward to season 2.

David Blue: Yeah, me too!

Let me start by asking you kind of a general question: Why should people tune in to season 2 of SGU?

Oh, that’s not a high-pressure question at all!

Yeah, you’re welcome!

Well, from the beginning I think we really fell into the groove that is SGU, you know. I think that people are starting to catch on that we’re not trying to rip off SG-1 or Atlantis or Battlestar. We’re our own show, and now that people are comfortable in that, we can kind of explore. And I think that season 2 has a lot of the elements that people have grown to love, like a lot of the interesting character developments, amazing action, more aliens and special effects. Script-wise, because we don’t get to see a lot of the shows before they air, I think season 2 is some of the best stuff we’ve done. I know for a fact that episode six is one of my favorites that we’ve ever done.

Interview: ‘Stargate Universe’ Co-Creator Brad Wright Previews Season 2

I got a chance to speak with Stargate Universe co-creator Brad Wright about the show’s second season, premiering Tuesday night on Syfy. I interviewed Wright for a feature I wrote for TV Squad about the evolution of the Stargate franchise and what fans can expect from SGU this year. Read on below for the interview. (Head back to TV DeathRay on Tuesday for an interview with David Blue, who plays Eli Wallace on SGU.)

Mike: Why should people tune in to watch season 2 of Stargate Universe?

Brad Wright: I think season 2 is going to be answering a lot of questions that were building up and that people may have been wanting to know the answers to all through season 1, the biggest of which is “What is this mission all about?” and “What was this ship launched for to begin with?”

If season 1 was “We’re stuck on a runaway train and we don’t even know where it’s going,” then in season 2 we figure out how to steer the train and drive the train, and, of course, the question still remains whether or not we should, but also what the mission is, what The Destiny was launched for, and with that, our characters begin to understand that this isn’t all about getting home anymore.
