Syfy Exec Talks ‘Caprica’ Cancelation on Twitter

Syfy exec Craig Engler took to Twitter earlier today to answer fan questions about the recent cancelation of the Battlestar Galactica prequel series  Caprica.

Engler took about an hour to explain what most of us already knew — the show’s live ratings were too low to justify a second season renewal. Still, the Q&A is worth a look. Not surprisingly, the Caprica fans are a pretty smart bunch, and they asked Engler some pretty tough and direct questions. Check out the Q&A below (or read the Twitter feed):

Engler: Getting a lot of questions and comments about #Caprica, naturally. Have put together some responses/answers for you all. Here you go:

Q) “You never liked the show and never wanted it to be a success”
A) We love #Caprica & spent years of effort creating and supporting the series to try and make it a success. We want all our shows to succeed.

TV DeathRay And Friends Talk ‘Caprica’ On Alpha Waves Radio

Nerds and fans of quality TV everywhere are hugging their toasters this week in mourning of Caprica, the latest primetime sci-fi show to get the axe in its first season. Our friend Michael Hinman from Airlock Alpha, who loved the show (almost) as much as I did, invited me on his live sci-fi talk show Alpha Waves Radio last night to chat about the series’ cancelation and about the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel Blood & Chrome.

Other guests on the show included Curt Wagner from Chicago Now’s Show Patrol and Joe Beaudoin Jr. from Battlestar Wiki. You can listen to or download the recording here or stream it below. I had a blast recording the show, and I hope you enjoy it.

‘No Ordinary Family’ Review: The Truth Comes Out in ‘No Ordinary Earthquake’

After last week’s lackluster episode, No Ordinary Family made a super-speedy return to form by unveiling what looks to be its first multi-episode arc, and some of the plot points the show has left dangling since the series’ pilot are starting to be resolved.

The Powell parents finally learned what we and daughter Daphne already knew: J.J. has been lying about his sudden smarts and athletic prowess. The realization occurred in an obvious, yet entertaining, fashion when the truth literally hit someone over the head.

‘Caprica,’ A Beautiful Mess, Is Canceled by Syfy

Syfy canceled the Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica yesterday afternoon. The news probably didn’t come as a shock to anyone who kept an eye on the show’s ratings over the past few weeks. To put it bluntly, Caprica was a ratings disaster, and it failed to repeat the critical success of its Peabody Award-winning predecessor. Syfy made a quick and cold business decision and immediately pulled the show from its schedule, promising to air the remaining episodes sometime next year.

I’m a little broken up about this news. Caprica was one of the most challenging and uncompromising shows on TV. It was a mess, of course, but it was a beautiful and ambitious mess. It was like a Soderbergh film – elegant, stylized, sad, angsty and rambling. But the series also delivered unexpected visceral moments, bizarre visual treats and biting social commentary. And robots! Who could forget the robots?

‘Stargate Universe’ – ‘Cloverdale’ Review @ TV Squad

I’m covering Syfy’s Stargate Universe for AOL’s TV Squad this season. My review of the latest episode, ‘Cloverdale,’ was posted earlier today. Click the link below to read and comment, and feel free to discuss the episode in the comment thread at the end of this post.

‘Stargate Universe’ Season 2, Episode 5 Recap

Here’s an excerpt from the review:

Last night’s episode of ‘Stargate Universe’ offered a bit of a departure from the show’s usual ultra-serialized storytelling style. Instead of watching the Destiny crew dealing with the ongoing problems and challenges of season 2 — Rush’s attempts to control the ship, taming the Lucian Alliance prisoners, drowsy aliens — we got a stand-alone story about Lt. Scott and his trip to Oz the town of Cloverdale.

‘Sanctuary’ Review: Will Nurses A Deadly Hangover in ‘Firewall’

Apparently, dying leaves a lasting mark on you that can’t be erased in a single episode, as we saw with Will grappling with the hangover from his “death” in last week’s season premiere. In a way, this ep of Sanctuary was very much an epilogue of the three-parter we just finished last week. It also set the stage for a potential new season-long quest for the team to embark upon. But first, there’s the matter of the two weird creatures in white unitards flashing all over the Sanctuary.

I’m hoping the writers and costumers weren’t hoping we’d be fooled into thinking the creatures were nude and that was just their skin, reflective properties or not. I think it’s another clue as to just what they were. Given clues like weird white skin, chameleon abilities, super-advanced technology, and the fact that they shopped at a dancewear store, Grissom would have had this solved by the end of the hour.

‘Fringe’ Season 3 Preview: Everyone’s Seeing Double

Season three of Fringe premieres Thurs., Sept. 23 at 9PM ET on Fox. To say I’m looking forward to it would be a serious understatement. It’s the one show that’s held my attention from the moment it premiered in Sept. 2008, and it’s also my teenage son’s favorite show — that’s just a bonus. Oh, the conversations we’ve had about Red Vines, Observers and Cortexiphan kids.

From the beginning, Fringe has drawn comparisons to The X-Files, and while I’m not convinced of the connection, I will say this: Fringe is populated by complex characters, an alt-world storyline that could evolve for years, and a mythology that isn’t dumbed down for viewers.

Premiere Trailer Trifecta: ‘Smallville,’ ‘Caprica,’ and ‘Supernatural’

The fall premieres continue tonight with the return of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on FX. Were just as excited about seeing Charlie huff more spray paint as the next guy, but the date we’re really looking forward to Sept. 24 – that’s the night two of our favorite shows, Smallville and Supernatural, return to TV!

The TV gods will smile upon us again on Oct. 5, the night Caprica heads back to Syfy to wrap up its first season. Here’s hoping Syfy surprises everyone and gives the show a season 2 renewal. Caprica might not be the most popular show on the cable network, but it’s easily one of the best.

Head after the jump for a feast of new promos and trailers for Smallville, Supernatural and Caprica, and let us know: which fall premiere are you looking forward to the most?

‘Warehouse 13′ Review – Secrets are Unearthed in ‘Buried’

“One shall die.” Those words haunted our agents as they tackled one of their most daunting cases yet — a case that revealed more secrets about the Warehouse than ever before. H.G. Wells was put to the test, and even Regent Valda showed up to lend a hand. (Oh, and Pete “won,” for what it’s worth.)

Before we dive into this ep, I want to say that I don’t think Valda (Mark Sheppard) is dead. My theory? He’s in collusion with H.G. on whatever nefarious plan she’s cooking up for Warehouse 2. It’s presumably full of lost artifacts, so the potential for chaos is certainly high.

We learned that the Warehouses are somewhat organic, and they have a psychic link with the Caretaker, currently Mrs. Frederic. When Warehouse 2 came back online, it started to overload Mrs. Frederic’s mind. Apparently, a link with two Warehouses can kill you. I wonder if being the Caretaker slows the aging process or if Mrs. Frederic was a young thing like Claudia when she first took on the role.

‘Warehouse 13′ Review: Peta and Myka Visit the ’60s in ‘When and Where’

Love is at the heart of every great story, isn’t it? And while it may not be at the heart of Pete and Myka’s story (yet?), it was at the core of Rebecca and Jack’s. Pete and Myka’s predecessors fell in love while working for the Warehouse in the 1960s, and now we got to see exactly how that happened. And it was all thanks to H.G. Wells. Figure out how yet? Maybe you can use the title as a hint.

While the jury’s still out on H.G. Wells as an agent — is she good or is she bad? — there’s no question she’s a great addition to the cast of Warehouse 13. For good or bad, I’ve come to feel about her character as I did for Claudia when she joined early in the first season. Wells adds a whole new dimension to the team and the show, not to mention conflict within the group.

I suspect she’s still working her own agenda, but for now at least she’s on the right side, and luckily had the right equipment to pull it off. Now, it’s time to get my nerd on… ready?
