‘Sanctuary’ Recap: The Team Pulls Off A Risky ‘Bank Job’

If I hadn’t seen Magnus, Will and Kate in this episode I’d have sworn we were watching an ep of TNT’s Leverage instead of Sanctuary. While there was a decided lack of planning in the heist that went down, it still had those same clever elements that always made Leverage so much fun to watch. You could try and figure out their next move, and you’d usually still be surprised by it.

After the continuity-heavy episodes we’ve gotten so far this season, Sanctuary relaxed a bit and brought us a “monster-of-the-week” episode. This particular monster was a creature that hibernates most of the time in an egg-like state. When temperatures rise enough, it can hatch and then it seeks out a living host to gestate inside of. When that process is complete, it explodes out of that body and then feeds, before falling into a peaceful hibernation-like state again.

‘Sanctuary’ Review: Will Nurses A Deadly Hangover in ‘Firewall’

Apparently, dying leaves a lasting mark on you that can’t be erased in a single episode, as we saw with Will grappling with the hangover from his “death” in last week’s season premiere. In a way, this ep of Sanctuary was very much an epilogue of the three-parter we just finished last week. It also set the stage for a potential new season-long quest for the team to embark upon. But first, there’s the matter of the two weird creatures in white unitards flashing all over the Sanctuary.

I’m hoping the writers and costumers weren’t hoping we’d be fooled into thinking the creatures were nude and that was just their skin, reflective properties or not. I think it’s another clue as to just what they were. Given clues like weird white skin, chameleon abilities, super-advanced technology, and the fact that they shopped at a dancewear store, Grissom would have had this solved by the end of the hour.

‘Sanctuary’ Season 3 Premiere Review: Keeping The Faith in ‘Kali’

So what’s in store for the third season of Sanctuary? Who the hell knows — we’ve got a three-parter to get through first!

We’ll save the “what’s to come” talk for next week. For now, let’s focus on the final hour of the ‘Kali’ three-parter … Will was on the verge of death, Bertha sent a massive tidal wave hurling toward the Sanctuary ship, and well … Wexford was a jackass! But we already knew that. The big question left by last season’s finale was: How are they all gonna survive?

Turns out the answer had a lot to do with faith. Magnus had faith throughout the premiere as well as conviction in her efforts to protect Bertha from Wexford, who had truly gone mad. No longer just power-hungry and controlling, he was Captain Ahab and Bertha was his White Whale, and nothing could stop his blind rage and hatred of the foul beast.
