‘No Ordinary Family’ Recap: Jim Almost Gets “Made” in ‘No Ordinary Mobster’

Sylvan Luca was really just an ordinary mobster lucky enough to stumble into an extraordinary extortion opportunity – Jim Powell, unmasked.

How could the Powell patriarch have been so careless with his identity? It all started when he became the avenging angel for George’s new love-interest, Assistant D.A.  Amy Acker. The chemistry between Romany Malco and Chelsea Ricketts makes their characters’ romance believable, and provides some relief from George’s sidekick duties. Unfortunately, the two only get to share one kiss in her driveway before Luca steps from the shadows and shoots her in the shoulder.

‘No Ordinary Family’ Recap: In-Laws Invade in ‘No Ordinary Visitors’

The Powell family has learned that trying to hide super powers is no picnic at the best of times, but throw in a visit from Jim’s in-laws, Barbara and Allan Crane, and the prospect becomes downright torturous. Kudos to guest-stars Cybill Shepherd and Bruce McGill as the in-laws from hell. Their one-liners left everyone stinging with painful passive-aggression.

Watching the family stew over keeping their powers under wraps while Stephanie’s snooping parents kept making mysterious discoveries, (the huge number of shoes in her closet, tons of chocolate bars in desk drawers and holes in the walls) was truly priceless. I’ve never had more fun watching the show, as the family spent the entire episode playing keep-away while Barbara and Allan raised the tension so much that I thought for sure the Powells would break and spill the beans!

‘No Ordinary Family’ Review: The Truth Comes Out in ‘No Ordinary Earthquake’

After last week’s lackluster episode, No Ordinary Family made a super-speedy return to form by unveiling what looks to be its first multi-episode arc, and some of the plot points the show has left dangling since the series’ pilot are starting to be resolved.

The Powell parents finally learned what we and daughter Daphne already knew: J.J. has been lying about his sudden smarts and athletic prowess. The realization occurred in an obvious, yet entertaining, fashion when the truth literally hit someone over the head.

‘No Ordinary Family’ Review: Moments of Weakness in ‘No Ordinary Vigilante’

The Powells didn’t exactly find their kryptonite this week, but they discovered something that could be far more dangerous if not kept in check – temptation.

Jim, who looked like the Central Park rapist in his feeble attempt to shroud his identity, was treating heroism like a fix to be satisfied, scrounging around for his next big save. He found it after witnessing a mugging, but the fix came with a price. The mugger was shot by a vigilante, leaving Jim with a choice: Go after the shooter or get the mugger to a hospital? Of course, Jim chose the latter, but he was back at it again the very next night – determined to catch the vigilante in the very same park, wearing the very same get up.

‘No Ordinary Family’ Review: Secrets and Lies in ‘No Ordinary Ring’

Spider-Man taught us that “with great power, comes great responsibility,” but it was Peter Parker who showed us the true cost of being a superhero. He beat the baddies, but he was vilified in the press, fell behind on his homework and had to nurse his ailing aunt while trying to protect the people of New York. The super-powered honeymoon period ended quickly for Peter, and the anguish that replaced it was clear in every line co-creator Steve Ditko drew in those early issues of the Marvel comic.

Last night, all four members of the Powell family suffered a similar hero hangover as Jim, Stephanie, Daphne and JJ all pined for the days when life wasn’t so complicated.

‘No Ordinary Family’ Review: Super-powered Growing Pains in ‘No Ordinary Marriage’

Every comic book fan knows that the origin story is only the beginning. After superheroes get their powers, they spend the next few days learning how to use them, and the Powell family was no exception. As Jim’s friend George pointed out on this week’s episode of No Ordinary Family, “No one knows what Superman’s first day on the job was like.”

Jim (Michael Chiklis) discovered that he’s invulnerable, but he’s not powerful enough to stop a vehicle in its tracks just by standing in front of it. When he attempted to stop a group of bank robbers from making an escape, well, they just ran right over him.

‘No Ordinary Family’ Premiere Review: Superpowers Are Fun Again!

ABC’s No Ordinary Family is what NBC’s Heroes should have become after its first season – a show about people with superpowers beating up bad guys and saving lives. It’s a simple return to the basics of herodom with a family-friendly vibe.

The show borrows heavily from the origin of Marvel Comics’ first superhero family, The Fantastic Four, in setting up the circumstances behind the onset of the Powell family’s special abilities. Comic book fans know that Mr. Fantastic, Ben Grimm and siblings Susan and Johnny Storm were granted their powers when their space shuttle was caught in a gamma radiation meteor shower. The four members of the Powell family experienced something very similar in Tuesday’s premiere episode.
