Shepherd Book Finally Gets a Backstory!

Ever wondered what Shepherd Book’s life was like before he joined Captain Mal and crew on Serenity? All of your questions will be answered in Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale, a new Firefly graphic novel from Dark Horse.

Similar to Serenity: Float Out, which explored the backstory of wisecracking pilot Hoban “Wash” Washburn, The Shepherd’s Tale will offer a new story about the mysterious preacherman played by Ron Glass in Joss Whedon’s awesome (but short-lived) series, Firefly and its movie spinoff, Serenity. Whedon and his brother Zack, who’s also writing Dark Horse’s awesome Terminator 1984 series, penned the book, which is available for pre-order now.

Felicia Day Talks About Her ‘Eureka’ Love Triangle With Fargo and Wil Wheaton!

I had a blast watching Felicia Day (Buffy, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) kick some CGI werewolf ass last Saturday in the Syfy original movie Red: Werewolf Hunter. (Don’t judge me … I can feel you judging me.) During a conference call last week to promote the TV flick, Day also spoke to reporters about her upcoming role on Syfy’s Eureka.

Day will play a scientist named Dr. Holly Martin on the quirky sci-fi series when it returns to the tube next year. Not much of a big surprise, I know, but there’s more … Day says her character will be involved in a love triangle plot with Fargo (Neil Grayston) and Dr. Isaac Parish (Will Wheaton)! Wow! (In case you didn’t already know, Day and Wheaton played an on-again-off-again couple on Day’s brilliant web series The Guild). Eureka really knows how to cater (pander?) to nerds, doesn’t it?

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to seeing Day on the show. Eureka used to be a guilty pleasure for me, but this season’s great batch of episodes has turned me into a true fan of the show. Want more details about Day’s role and the upcoming episodes of Eureka? Head after the jump for some quotes from the conference call Q&A.

Syfy Exec Talks ‘Caprica’ Cancelation on Twitter

Syfy exec Craig Engler took to Twitter earlier today to answer fan questions about the recent cancelation of the Battlestar Galactica prequel series  Caprica.

Engler took about an hour to explain what most of us already knew — the show’s live ratings were too low to justify a second season renewal. Still, the Q&A is worth a look. Not surprisingly, the Caprica fans are a pretty smart bunch, and they asked Engler some pretty tough and direct questions. Check out the Q&A below (or read the Twitter feed):

Engler: Getting a lot of questions and comments about #Caprica, naturally. Have put together some responses/answers for you all. Here you go:

Q) “You never liked the show and never wanted it to be a success”
A) We love #Caprica & spent years of effort creating and supporting the series to try and make it a success. We want all our shows to succeed.

DVR Ratings Boost ‘Fringe,’ Parenthood,’ ‘The Event’

Some of our favorite network shows saw a significant boost in ratings thanks to the latest DVR playback numbers.

The New York Times reports that ratings-challenged series Fringe, Parenthood and The Event saw their viewership stats increase by more than forty percent for the third week of the new fall TV season. That’s great news for fans of quality TV and, in the case of The Event, highly entertaining genre schlock.

Sadly, these shows will probably never be able to compete with big hits like Dancing With the Stars or Two and a Half Men (more…)

More Melissa Rauch on ‘The Big Bang Theory?’ Yes, Please!

The Big Bang Theory has been better than ever this season. Now in its fourth year, the show has become one of the best and funniest multi-camera sitcoms on the air. Sure, it still tends to coast a bit (Remember the fart jokes and the silly robot arm plot earlier this season?), but the show delivers enough laughs and memorable over-the-top character beats (like Sheldon scrambling down the stairs repeating Leonard’s name over and over) to make up for that.

A few weeks ago, we saw the return of Wolowitz’s nerdy ex-girlfriend Bernadette, played by the funny and lovely Melissa Rauch. It was a welcome return for a couple of reasons. (more…)

Morning Blast: James Cameron, ‘Smallville,’ Marvel, ‘Terra Nova,’ and More

Here’s a quick dose of nerd TV news to spice up your breakfast.

- Proving that he’s run out of original ideas, James Cameron is developing a TV series based on his 1994 hit movie True Lies. So, yeah, more explosions and dead terrorists are coming to TV. Hooray! [Deadline]

- Alan Ritchson, who plays Aquaman on Smallville, says his appearance in the show’s upcoming final season will be … wait for it …. Very dark! He says: “Aquaman is such a bubble-gummy type of character [who] doesn’t get a lot of respect as a superhero, so to be able to come and play a darker side is going to be a lot of fun.” [E!]

- Marvel Comics’ Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada says we could see some live-action TV shows based on Marvel properties heading to TV in the very near future [MTV]

- Awww, The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco broke her leg in a horse race this weekend. She missed a taping of the show and will be written out of an episode this season. [THR]

- The premiere ep of the new FX dramedy Terriers, starring Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James, didn’t fare very well in the ratings race this week. Too bad, it looks like a good show. [Deadline]

The End is Nearer: ‘Caprica’ Returns to Syfy This October

Caprica showed a lot of promise during the first half of its freshman season. Much like Battlestar Galactica, the show’s first nine episodes offered a dark and uncompromising view of a culture gripped by fear and uncertainty and scrambling to protect the things that matter.

The show also introduced us to an amazing and ultra-stylized fantasy world where regular people could become super powered sci-fi gangsters, kingpins and mercenaries. Plus, it has robots! Killer robots!

So, yeah, I love the show, and I’m happy to hear that it’s heading back to Syfy a few months earlier than previously expected, Oct. 5 at 10 PM ET, to be exact. Head after the jump for more from Syfy about Caprica Season 1.5 and to view an awesomely violent sneak peek of the new season.

UPDATE: The season 1.5 premiere is directed by Daniel Graystone himself, Eric Stoltz! That’s a new shot of him working on the set up top.

Morning Blast: ‘Stargate Universe,’ ‘The Dark Tower,’ ‘Smallville,’ ‘Fringe,’ and More

OMFGeez! It feels so good to be surfing the Internets again! An evil, evil beastie called Tropical Storm Hermine blew threw my town this week and killed my connex for almost two days. Two days! That’s like centuries for someone who depends on this infinite series of tubes to make a living. But the modem lights are flashing again and all is right with the world, so let’s get back to business — here’s all the hot nerd TV news you need to know about this mornin’:

- I’m counting the days until David Hewlett reprises the role of Rodney McKay on next season of Stargate Universe. Hewlett and Robert Picardo (Richard Woolsey) will guest star on episode 15 of season 2, airing sometime in the second half of 2011. In a new interview, Hewlett says the writers have done a “really good job” of working McKay and Woolsey into the ep. [Gateworld]

- And speaking of SGU, here are a bunch of photos from the season 2 premiere, airing Sept. 28. [Spoiler TV]

- Universal is making a movie trilogy and a TV show based on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. The films and the show will be closely linked, and Ron Howard has signed to direct the first flick and the show’s first season. [THR]

- Aquaman, Aka “that guy who talks to fish,” is heading back to Smallville this season. Alan Ritchson will reprise the role. [Ausiello]

‘Sandman’ Claws Its Way Out of Development Hell for Planned TV Series

Yes, Dream King fans, you read that right: It looks like Neil Gaiman’s groundbreaking comic book series Sandman is coming to TV. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner TV is acquiring the rights from DC Comics and is in talks with producers to adapt the series for the small screen. First choice on the wish list is rumored to be Supernatural creator Eric Kripke.

Gaiman’s Sandman comics tell the tale of a Dream King known by many names, but most commonly Morpheus, a brother in a family of immortal concepts called The Endless. The story begins when an occultist seeking immortality summons Dream and holds him captive. He escapes more than 70 years later and arrives in the modern-day world ready to rebuild his realm that has degenerated significantly in his absence.

The book combines horror, fantasy and a number of other literary genres outside the traditional superhero wheelhouse. It’s notable for being the only comic book to ever win a World Fantasy Award. For many readers and critics, Sandman gave comics legitimacy by transcending stereotypes of the medium, and it remains a bestselling graphic novel collection to this day.
