Brad Wright On The End of ‘Stargate Universe’

(Originally posted @ mikemoody.net)

Stargate Universe is over. (Sadness.)

Syfy aired the show’s final episode on Monday (read my recap for AOL TV), and its pretty clear that the franchise won’t be bouncing back for at least a few years. It’s a shame, since SGU was only starting to find its legs as a compelling, ambitious, arc-driven sci-fi drama, and Stargate was one of the most consistently entertaining sci-fi brands of the last decade. Here’s hoping it’ll return some day in some form, and when it does, I hope I’ll be here to write about it again.

I interviewed Stargate Universe co-creator Brad Wright and star David Blue about the series finale for a recent AOL TV feature. Below you’ll find text from a follow-up email interview I conducted with Wright about the show. The interview features Wright’s answers to specific questions about the finale that I didn’t use for the AOL feature in order to avoid giving away spoilers. Enjoy, Stargate nerds:

Felicia Day Talks About Her ‘Eureka’ Love Triangle With Fargo and Wil Wheaton!

I had a blast watching Felicia Day (Buffy, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) kick some CGI werewolf ass last Saturday in the Syfy original movie Red: Werewolf Hunter. (Don’t judge me … I can feel you judging me.) During a conference call last week to promote the TV flick, Day also spoke to reporters about her upcoming role on Syfy’s Eureka.

Day will play a scientist named Dr. Holly Martin on the quirky sci-fi series when it returns to the tube next year. Not much of a big surprise, I know, but there’s more … Day says her character will be involved in a love triangle plot with Fargo (Neil Grayston) and Dr. Isaac Parish (Will Wheaton)! Wow! (In case you didn’t already know, Day and Wheaton played an on-again-off-again couple on Day’s brilliant web series The Guild). Eureka really knows how to cater (pander?) to nerds, doesn’t it?

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to seeing Day on the show. Eureka used to be a guilty pleasure for me, but this season’s great batch of episodes has turned me into a true fan of the show. Want more details about Day’s role and the upcoming episodes of Eureka? Head after the jump for some quotes from the conference call Q&A.

Eliza Dushku: ‘Dollhouse Was A Deep, Dark And Powerful Show’

Unnofficial Dollhouse week continues here at TV DeathRay! Seriously, we loved the show, but we didn’t exactly plan on going “all Dollhouse all the time” this week! But the Internet refuses to stop bleeding love for Joss Whedon’s last TV mindfrak, and we’re following suit. First, we posted a brilliant music video starring Fran Kranz, and now we’re a pointing you to a new interview with series star Eliza Dushku.

Dushku, who guest stars on The Big Bang Theory on Nov. 4, talked to our pals at TV Squad about the final season of Dollhouse, her love for Joss Whedon’s brain, and her future plans. Here’s how she responded when asked if it was difficult working on Dollhouse under the constant threat of cancelation:

… We seized the day every chance that we had. We just took the approach of “game on, let’s give it everything we have” while we have the stage, go even darker and deeper, and really challenge the people that have followed us this far. It was such a deep and dark powerful show to be a part of and we’re really proud of what we did. Regardless of people that didn’t get a chance to catch it while it was on.

TV DeathRay Podcast 2: ‘Chuck’ Actress Mekenna Melvin

The TV DeathRay Podcast is back, and we have a special treat for all you Chuck fans this week — an interview with actress Mekenna Melvin!

As most of you know, Mekenna plays Alex, the daughter of Adam Baldwin’s character Casey, on Chuck. We talked about her role on the show, her martial arts training, and about the time her mom dressed her up as a Klingon when she was a kid. For real.

It’s a short interview (and the audio quality is a little spotty) but we hope you enjoy it. You can read the full interview with Mekenna very soon at Film Gecko.

Interview: David Blue Previews ‘Stargate Universe’ Season 2

I spoke with David Blue of Stargate Universe recently about the show’s second season (premiering tonight on Syfy) and the history of the Stargate franchise for a post I wrote for TV Squad.

You’ll find the full interview below. We talked about his favorite episode, the challenges of season 2, and the new developments in store for David’s character, Eli Wallace. (Don’t forget to check out my interview with SGU co-creator Brad Wright).

Mike: I’m a big fan of the show, and I’m really looking forward to season 2.

David Blue: Yeah, me too!

Let me start by asking you kind of a general question: Why should people tune in to season 2 of SGU?

Oh, that’s not a high-pressure question at all!

Yeah, you’re welcome!

Well, from the beginning I think we really fell into the groove that is SGU, you know. I think that people are starting to catch on that we’re not trying to rip off SG-1 or Atlantis or Battlestar. We’re our own show, and now that people are comfortable in that, we can kind of explore. And I think that season 2 has a lot of the elements that people have grown to love, like a lot of the interesting character developments, amazing action, more aliens and special effects. Script-wise, because we don’t get to see a lot of the shows before they air, I think season 2 is some of the best stuff we’ve done. I know for a fact that episode six is one of my favorites that we’ve ever done.

Interview: ‘Stargate Universe’ Co-Creator Brad Wright Previews Season 2

I got a chance to speak with Stargate Universe co-creator Brad Wright about the show’s second season, premiering Tuesday night on Syfy. I interviewed Wright for a feature I wrote for TV Squad about the evolution of the Stargate franchise and what fans can expect from SGU this year. Read on below for the interview. (Head back to TV DeathRay on Tuesday for an interview with David Blue, who plays Eli Wallace on SGU.)

Mike: Why should people tune in to watch season 2 of Stargate Universe?

Brad Wright: I think season 2 is going to be answering a lot of questions that were building up and that people may have been wanting to know the answers to all through season 1, the biggest of which is “What is this mission all about?” and “What was this ship launched for to begin with?”

If season 1 was “We’re stuck on a runaway train and we don’t even know where it’s going,” then in season 2 we figure out how to steer the train and drive the train, and, of course, the question still remains whether or not we should, but also what the mission is, what The Destiny was launched for, and with that, our characters begin to understand that this isn’t all about getting home anymore.
