‘Glee’ Recap: Kurt Takes Center Stage in ‘Never Been Kissed’

“You can’t punch the gay out of me any more than I can punch the ignoramus out of you.” – Kurt

Apologies to all the folks who were waiting with bated breath for my latest Glee review — hopefully there are a handful of you out there. I’ve been having health issues lately and they’ve delayed my updates. A bad bout of food poisoning kept me from reviewing ‘The Rocky Horror Glee Show,’ which I finally watched and loved so much I might want to marry it, and a yucky head cold made me post this review late. But, I’m BACK! Now on to the episode.

At first I thought ‘Never Been Kissed’ would be your standard, “let’s assign the kids a mashup, threaten the glee club’s budget and throw in a few Sue Sylvester quips” episode, but luckily the plot deviated somewhat from the norm and was packed with touching, character-developing moments.

‘Glee’ Review: Harmony and Heart in ‘Duets’

“I know you’re lonely, but you’re not alone.” – Rachel

Now that’s how it’s done.

The latest episode of Glee, ‘Duets,’ offered a nice mix of music and heartfelt storytelling — exactly how I like my Glee. Fewer recycled plotlines/hidden pregnancies and more character development, yay!

In this ep, Mr. Schue assigned the glee club to perform duets, and turned it into a competition — the prize being dinner for two at Breadstix. (Who knew bottomless breadsticks were such a draw?) The kids went after the prize with gusto, and some of the duets actually end up advancing the plot, yay again!

‘Glee’ Review: Praise For ‘Grilled Cheesus’

“I don’t believe in God, Dad, but I believe in you, and I believe in us. That’s what is sacred to me.” – Kurt

Wow. Based on the first few minutes, I wasn’t sure I’d like this episode. Finn saw Jesus in his grilled-cheese sandwich and started praying to “Grilled Cheesus.” Cue my eye roll. However, I was proven wrong. Glee’s third episode of its second season was poignant and powerful, with a moving performance by Chris Colfer (as Kurt) and a couple of heart-wrenching songs for good measure. It was definitely the best episode of the season so far, and perhaps one of the best of the series, even if it occasionally felt like a “very special episode.”

This ep took on a topic that could easily become cloying or preachy, but luckily wasn’t — God. When Kurt’s father had a heart attack that left him in a coma, the glee kids reached out to him through prayers and spiritual songs about trusting God and asking for help. Kurt flatly told them that he didn’t believe in God, and his speech about why he didn’t resonated extra loudly considering the recent, tragic string of suicides among gay teens: “(God) makes me gay and then makes His followers go around saying it’s a choice, as if I’d choose to be mocked every day of my life,” he said.

‘Glee’ Review: I Liked ‘Britney/Brittany,’ Don’t Judge Me!

“It’s a Britney Spears sex riot!” – Sue Sylvester

I know I probably shouldn’t have liked ‘Britney/Brittany,’ the second episode of Glee’s sophomore season. I’ve never been a huge Britney Spears fan, and I didn’t like the Madonna episode last season as much as others did because I thought it strained to create a plot around the songs, and the contrivances were distracting (although Sue’s “Vogue” was all kinds of awesome).

Still, I admit it: I liked this ep. Maybe because I think Brittany (Heather Morris) does a better Britney than, well, Britney. Maybe because Santana (Naya Rivera) and Artie (Kevin McHale) got solos. Maybe because of John Stamos. What can I say? Don’t judge me.

Rights Gone Wrong: Disability Groups Vs. Gleeks With Disabilities

When Glee’s producers cast able-bodied triple-threat Kevin McHale as paraplegic performer Artie Abrams, they sparked a continuing controversy between disability organizations and Gleeks with disabilities.

Much of the disability community is still smarting after too many years of feeling artistically insulted by seeing countless characters with disabilities portrayed by able-bodied actors (e.g. Hugh Laurie in House, Sean Penn in I Am Sam, Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot). But my own card-carrying membership in the same club (I have cerebral palsy) should qualify me to say that those who call Glee just the latest perpetuator of this problem are missing the mark.

Co-creator Brad Falchuck was quoted numerous times last year saying, “We brought in anyone…white, black, Asian, or in a wheelchair” when casting the show.

Falchuck may have failed to find a suitable musical multi-talented actor with a real-life disability, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t search hard enough. All actors may rightfully campaign for a turn in the casting director’s office, but whether they walk or wheel through the door, everyone still has to earn each part. If Falchuck had chosen an actor who actually used a wheelchair, but who was otherwise unqualified, that would have been nothing but a different form of discrimination – tokenism.

‘Glee’ Season 2 Premiere Review: New Characters, New Songs, Same Old Plotlines!

Coach Beiste: You’re all coffee and no omelet.
Sue Sylvester: That doesn’t make any sense.

The season premiere of Glee, “Audition,” introduced new characters and gave us some very hip, fun musical numbers, but I have to admit that as an avid Gleek, I still came away a bit disappointed.

My biggest frustration is that the show is starting to recycle plotlines too much. The glee club is facing budget cuts again? They can’t recruit enough new members again? Haven’t we been here before? Yeah, I thought so.

‘Glee’ Season 2 Preview: More Singing, More Dancing And … Sunshine Corazon!

The day we’ve been waiting for is finally upon us, fellow Gleeks — the Glee season premiere airs tonight. Our favorite ragtag bunch of talented misfits will return to our screen, probably get a few more Slushees to the face and, oh yeah, sing and dance too. (I don’t think that information requires a spoiler alert. The following tidbits might, so, SPOILER ALERT!)

Here’s the official description for tonight’s premiere ep, “Audition,” according to TV Guide Online:

Season two begins with more budget cuts looming and the glee kids reeling from their loss at Regionals. There are new members to recruit, including Sunshine Corazon (Charice) and Sam (Chord Overstreet), but Rachel and Finn don’t see eye to eye on them. Meanwhile, McKinley High has a new football coach, Shannon Beiste (Dot Marie Jones), who immediately shows herself to be a threat both to the glee club and the Cheerios.

First of all — Sunshine Corazon? Really? OK, moving on.

DVDs and Blu-Rays exist. They come out every week, actually. So here are six new releases you should nab (or put on your Christmas wish list) this week …

  • Glee: The Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-Ray) – No naked Katee Sackhoff here, just 22 hours of pure glee club awesomeness – well, 15 hours of that and about 7 or so hours of stuff like embarrassing white boy rapping and fake pregnancy foolishness.
  • Fringe: The Complete Second Season (DVD and Blu-Ray) – Want proof that the broadcast networks don’t kill every decent uber-serialzed sci-fi show on TV in its first season? Buy this.
  • Bored to Death: the Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-Ray) – Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, and Zach Galifianakis star in this hilarious and sad little tale about a writer who moonlights as a private detective.
