‘Fringe’ Recap: Broyles Bites the ‘Entrada’ Dust

Was ‘Entrada’ worth the wait? I say yes. It was the universe-melding episode that Fringe-tastic fans have been waiting for, and it left us with the feeling that all is right in the worlds again. Well, sort of. OK, it was somewhat predictable and somewhat not.

For one thing, we knew the two Olivias would find their way home again. That was a given. We just weren’t sure how it would all play out. I thought from the beginning of this arc that Superhero Alt-Broyles would help our Olivia get back to this universe again. Even as he told a panicked, caged Olivia that he couldn’t help her, you had the feeling that he’d crack under the pressure of a hopeful future for both worlds.

And yet … I was really sorry to see him disintegrate during Walter’s accidental sending of Faux-Livia back to her own world. He could have been a nice ally to have on this side. I assume there needed to be an equal mass exchange, and since Alt-Broyles weighed more than Alt-Livia, some of his mass had to go and he ended up char-broiled. What a shocker for our Broyles, though, to see his own half-body in the van. Then again, he didn’t seem all that shook up about saying goodbye to “himself” laid out on the table.

‘Fringe’ Recap: Olivia Helps ‘The Abducted’

Fringe: The Abducted, Season 3, Episode 7“I’m calling from New York. I just saw a woman disappear in front of my eyes. Her name is Olivia. She has a message for you. She’s trapped in the other universe.” – Cleaning Lady to Peter on the phone

Darn it all! Just when you think she’s home free, Olivia gets yanked back “over there.” That was really smart thinking, though, and thank goodness for the woman in the store who did what Olivia asked, despite the complete insanity of it all. For a minute there, I thought maybe she didn’t have time to get her message out before being pulled back to the tank.

Where do we go from here? I wonder if Peter will be totally miffed to learn he’s been sleeping with the wrong Olivia. And I had a feeling Olivia would find an ally or two on the other side — love the dynamic with Henry the cab driver — but I sure didn’t think it would be Broyles, thanks to her “FBI” slip. After a couple of meh episodes, things got pretty exciting there at the end.

‘Fringe’ Recap: Mystery Solved at ’6955 kHz’?

Fringe, 6955 kHz, season 3, episode 6Faux-Livia is really starting to bug me. For one thing, she’s just annoying, and the camera always pans to her face whenever something is happening that could “out” her as being from the other side. She’s not very good at hiding her emotions.

And for all the brilliance in the Fringe crew, they’re really dumb for not picking up on any of that. Especially Peter — he’s sleeping with her, but not picking up any signals that she’s not the true Olivia? Argh.

The only one who has an inkling that things aren’t right is Nina Sharp, who, interestingly enough, seems to be part of the team now. What a difference from earlier in the series, when she was the mysterious bad guy. In fact, based on her conversation with Walter in this week’s episode – sharing a joint, no less (nod to medical marijuana) – I wouldn’t be at all surprised if a little romance sparked between the two of them.

‘Fringe’ Recap: Olivia’s World is Cloudy in ‘Amber 31422′

Fringe, Amber 31422Just for the heck of it, I Googled the word, “amber” and discovered that a piece of the fossilized resin with a lizard inside of it can fetch upwards of $20K. But the guy who was chipped out of it on this week’s Fringe would have been much more valuable, which is exactly why his brother decided to sacrifice himself. He didn’t want his sibling subjected to years of poking and prodding by the Fringe Division. Plus, he’s the reason his brother was in the amber in the first place, and he felt guilty about the whole thing.

Still, you have to wonder how long it will take folks to figure out that their loved ones are actually alive and well inside the hardened stuff. In fact, it seems odd that more people haven’t been broken loose. That would be the first thing I’d do if a friend or family member was entombed inside, even if I knew it would weaken the structural integrity of the amber.

DVR Ratings Boost ‘Fringe,’ Parenthood,’ ‘The Event’

Some of our favorite network shows saw a significant boost in ratings thanks to the latest DVR playback numbers.

The New York Times reports that ratings-challenged series Fringe, Parenthood and The Event saw their viewership stats increase by more than forty percent for the third week of the new fall TV season. That’s great news for fans of quality TV and, in the case of The Event, highly entertaining genre schlock.

Sadly, these shows will probably never be able to compete with big hits like Dancing With the Stars or Two and a Half Men (more…)

‘Fringe’ Review: ‘Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep?’

Fringe: Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep?I dunno … DO shapeshifters dream of electric sheep? I’m still unclear on that after watching this episode of Fringe. One thing I AM clear on, though, is that Newton is starting to bug the heck out of me. I actually stood up and cheered when he downed the blotter paper at the end and went into his Joe Cocker convulsions. Now if Faux-Livia would just follow suit, I’d be one happy camper.

Yes, Faux-Livia is starting to bug the heck out of me, too. For one thing, she’s just annoying. For another, she’s kidding herself if she thinks no one will pick up on the fact that she’s a fraud. Like when she nagged Walter to go get something to eat so Terminator cop could steel the silver disc from Senator Shapeshifter’s ass. The real Olivia would never do that. She’d be laser-focused on getting the job done. She’d be all over that guy’s ass.

‘Fringe’ Review: Faux-Livia, Smart Drugs and ‘The Plateau’

I dunno … how could someone predict a Rube Goldberg chain of events that would cause someone to get hit by a bus? And have it happen several times in a row? And hinge on a ballpoint pen? Even someone who’s been taking an experimental “smart drug” that causes his IQ to catapult into the upper stratosphere? Call me crazy (or dumb, either way), but there are just too many variables for that to happen as it did on last night’s Fringe.

Let’s take this just a little bit further … So, say you absolutely know when a bus arrives at a certain destination (but, really, what about a flat tire, the driver suffering a heart attack or some other unplanned event?). But let’s say, hypothetically, that it would be on the same schedule every day. The odds of predicting the exact moment when Faux-Livia would be running by a forklift loaded with cement blocks at a construction site? Amidst all the other variables involving people, machinery, weather, and everything in between? Not gonna happen, dude. I don’t believe it, no way, no how.

‘Fringe’ Review: Walter Thinks Outside ‘The Box’

Well, it’s official: Listening to Jan Hammer’s theme song for Miami Vice makes us dumber. I guess I should start listening to more opera. I did love hearing Walter sing, though.

And, thank you, Fringe. Last week’s premiere didn’t exactly knock my socks off, but I needn’t have worried — although I’m treading cautiously into the future. Now that Walter is the head honcho at Massive Dynamic, I hope they don’t abandon our beloved basement lab at Harvard. Where will they put Jean?

I’m also not sure I like the idea of switching back and forth to and from the alternate universe. Last week’s episode was over there, this week’s was over here, and it looks like we’ll be back over there next week. I look forward to the Walterisms and interplay among the Fringe crew, and it’ll burn my shorts if we don’t get a dose of that every week.

‘Fringe’ Season 3 Premiere Review: Olivia Teams Up With Bubbles From ‘The Wire!’

Fringe Season 3 Premiere, OliviaThe season 3 premiere of Fringe took us right back to where we left off last season — with Olivia stuck in the alternate universe. Things had advanced slightly, because Mr. Secretary, i.e. Walternate, had ordered his minions to give Olivia a big syringe full of memory-transferring drugs to make her believe she was Faux-Livia.

Did it work? That’s one of the big questions. I want to believe that our beloved Olivia is just making everyone in the alternate universe believe that she’s Faux-Livia in order to buddy up to Charlie Francis and find a way to bust out of there now that the portal in the theater is encased in the amber Jello mold. But it certainly seems as though she believes she’s Faux-Livia. Either way, her newfound sharpshooter skills will come in handy.

At any rate, it must be getting pretty crowded inside her head. First she had to deal with all of John Scott’s memories, and now she has to deal with Faux-Livia’s memories.

‘Fringe’ Season 3 Preview: Everyone’s Seeing Double

Season three of Fringe premieres Thurs., Sept. 23 at 9PM ET on Fox. To say I’m looking forward to it would be a serious understatement. It’s the one show that’s held my attention from the moment it premiered in Sept. 2008, and it’s also my teenage son’s favorite show — that’s just a bonus. Oh, the conversations we’ve had about Red Vines, Observers and Cortexiphan kids.

From the beginning, Fringe has drawn comparisons to The X-Files, and while I’m not convinced of the connection, I will say this: Fringe is populated by complex characters, an alt-world storyline that could evolve for years, and a mythology that isn’t dumbed down for viewers.
