DVD and Blu-ray Weekly: ‘Party Down,’ ‘Legend of the Seeker,’ ‘Scrubs’ and More

Here’s a rundown of the notable TV titles that were released on DVD today:

  • Party Down: Season Two (DVD) – It’s a shame that Party Down is now dead and gone. It was one of the funniest and most original character-based comedies to come along in years. Season 2 is even better than the first (partly because it features more Kristen Bell).
  • Legend of the Seeker: The Complete Second Season (DVD) – I’ll admit to never watching this fantasy series co-produced by Sam Raimi when it was on the air, but I’m looking forward to checking it out after hearing about how much people loved it.
  • Scrubs: The Complete Collection (DVD) – I have a soft spot in my heart for Scrubs despite that bizarre and disappointing final season/spinoff thing that happened. I’m sure I’ll buy this … one day.
  • Swamp Thing: The Legend Continues (DVD) – I used to love watching the ’80s Swamp Thing series on cable, but I’m not sure if this is as good as that. Anyone who’s seen this care to weigh in? Is this worth a buy?

DVD and Blu-ray Weekly: ‘Community,’ ‘Bored to Death,’ ‘Human Target’ and More

It’s Tuesday! Time to eyeball the week’s notable new DVD and Blu-ray releases.

  • Community: The Complete First Season (DVD) – The funniest and most inventive comedy to premiere last fall promises to be even better this season. Catch up with season one’s insane paintball warfare, obsessive pottery sculpting, and chicken finger-stealing action. You won’t regret it.
  • Bored to Death: The Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-ray) The Internet lied and told me this came out last week. It didn’t. But it’s out now, so check it out if you like watching Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson acting like idiots and smoking a ton of pot (How could you not?).
  • Modern Family: The Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-ray) – Season one of Modern Family won me over with a string of laugh-out-loud funny episodes and its lovable, huggable Diet Arrested Development vibe.
  • Human Target: The Complete First Season – (DVD and Blu-ray) This geeky action show should have been awful, but it turned out to be pretty awesome. Mark Valley leads a cast that includes TV vet Chi McBride and a scene-stealing Jackie Earle Haley as creepy/cuddly killer Guerrero.
  • 30 Rock: Season Four (DVD) – 30 Rock is still one of the best and smartest shows on TV. Season four finds Liz Lemmon dealing with talk show stardom, meeting a sick and twisted James Franco and finding the man of her dreams, Matt Damon.
  • How I Met Your Mother: Season Five (DVD) – I’m told that the mother still hasn’t shown up, and that Ted continues his spiral down the dark pit of douche-baggery. So, yeah, this one’s your call.
  • Being Human: Season Two (DVD and Blu-ray) A mopey ghost, a troubled vampire and a nerdy werewolf living in the same house? What could possibly go wrong? Answer: Everything!

DVD and Blu-Ray Weekly: ‘Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Glee,’ ‘Sunny,’ ‘Fringe,’ and More

DVDs and Blu-Rays exist. They come out every week, actually. So here are six new releases you should nab (or put on your Christmas wish list) this week …

  • Glee: The Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-Ray) – No naked Katee Sackhoff here, just 22 hours of pure glee club awesomeness – well, 15 hours of that and about 7 or so hours of stuff like embarrassing white boy rapping and fake pregnancy foolishness.
  • Fringe: The Complete Second Season (DVD and Blu-Ray) – Want proof that the broadcast networks don’t kill every decent uber-serialzed sci-fi show on TV in its first season? Buy this.
  • Bored to Death: the Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-Ray) – Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, and Zach Galifianakis star in this hilarious and sad little tale about a writer who moonlights as a private detective.

It’s sleek and beautiful. It boasts sharp edges and more special features and hidden pleasures than I know what to do with. No, I’m not talking about a luxury sports car — that wouldn’t be appropriate for a blog called TV DeathRay –  I’m talking about the Lost: Complete Collection DVD box set.

Seasons 1 through 6 of the epic series are packed together in a fantastic combination of awesome, just released last week. The DVDs include all the usual goodies: Deleted scenes, commentary and various features (the final disc features the 12-minute ‘New Man in Charge’ special that answers some questions), but it’s the incredibly elaborate packaging and cool extras that come alongside the discs that make this set stand apart from the rest. Here’s a quick look at some of the cool stuff that’s inside:
