‘Community’ Recap: Of Trampolines and ‘Gender’

Quick recap this week. I gotta get on the road early today, so here we go … Last night’s episode of Community was probably the weakest of the season so far, but it was still hilarious, clever and full of weird little moments that no other show could pull off.

The A plot with the ladies and Abed battling a pack of mean girls, led by guest star Hillary Duff (who was given little to do here but look reasonably hot and spout some pretty vicious one-liners) wasn’t nearly as funny as the B plot with Jeff and Troy finding a bliss-inducing “illegal” trampoline.

The secret garden/trampoline plot made absolutely no sense, but it didn’t have to – it was funny in a trippy and cartoony way, but it was also rooted in the boys’ very real need to find a place to relax and escape from the world. It’s too bad the neo-Nazi janitor reminded them of an awful truth – a paradise based on the exclusion of others can’t last. Stupid neo-Nazi janitors, they always ruin everything.

‘Community’ Review: It’s Nerds Vs. Zombies in ‘Epidemiology’

I’m just gonna come right out and say it: Community owns Halloween. For two years in a row, the show has delivered some mighty fine TV around Halloween time. Last year, a drugged-out Pierce dressed up as the Beast Master, a Day of the Dead celebration almost turned deadly, and Abed swooped in to save the day wearing a Batman costume. This year — Zombies!

I loved how the zombie attack on Greendale didn’t turn out to be a dream or a hallucination someone was having after eating too many candy fangs or fun size Snickers. Dean Pelton accidentally served everyone finger food laced with an experimental agent that turned the entire student body into zombies. That’s right, zombies are (sorta) cannon on Community! And the only one who could stop them was (Surprise!) Troy.

Halloween Week: Zombies Attack Tonight On ‘Community’

Here’s a sneak peek of tonight’s Halloween-themed episode of Community featuring brain-eating zombies, a dancing Abed and a cross-dressing Chang (Sexxay!):

Our pals at TV Squad have a fun feature about tonight’s episode. “The Halloween episode is extravagant and insane, and, just like the paintball episode, will either get me promoted or fired,” says series creator Dan Harmon. Can’t wait!

‘Community’ Review: Butt Flags and ‘Basic Rocket Science’

Community knows exactly how to woo my little nerd heart.

‘Basic Rocket Science’ wasn’t quite as clever as last season’s chicken finger mafia episode, and it lacked the ambition of ‘Modern Warfare,’ but it was still pretty damn amazing. This was one of the best, funniest and nerdiest eps of the series so far.

I guess you could file this one under the “gimmick” pile or whatever we’re supposed to dub these insane concept eps. A lot of the funny came from the non-stop movie and pop culture references — Armageddon, Apollo 13, Galaxy Quest and old school KFC commercials to name a few – but the story also spoke to the heart of the series. It was all about teamwork.

Community follows a group of very different people united by their shared hopes, dreams and, well, failures. They might all be sidetracked losers stuck in a low rent community college, but this ep reminded us that they’re a team, and they’re better off working together than alone. I know that sounds a little flowery but, thankfully, Community never gets to gooey or overly sentimental.

‘Community’ Review: ‘That is Gangsta!’

Jeff faced his own mortality as Pierce refused to face his mother’s death on last night’s Community. Actually, Pierce refused to accept the idea that his mother’s “body vapors” wouldn’t live on forever inside of a goofy-looking lava lamp. Of course he did — this is Community we’re talking about, people!

While the boys dealt with their meta-issues, Britta and Annie decided to raise funds to support the cause-of-the-week at Greendale – the Gulf oil spill. It was fun to see the show kinda sorta address the whole “Who’s hotter, Annie or Britta?” question and even give us its own silly version of an answer: They’re pretty much equally hot, but the boys like Annie better because of her impossibly bubbly personality and her excellent posture.

‘Community’ Season 2 Premiere Review: What’s Love Got To Do With It?

My mind feels numb after watching three straight hours of sitcoms, so please forgive me if this review reads like Frito from Idiocracy wrote it after a night of chugging 40′s and huffing paint. I can actually feel my brain rotting right now, but, hey, it was all worth it — because now I can say, without any doubts, that Community is the best, smartest and funniest show on Thursday nights.

30 Rock, The Office and The Big Bang Theory also delivered the funny with solid Thursday premieres (sorry $#*! My Dad Says and Outsourced, you guys never really had a chance), but Community, to quote any popular rapper of the past ten years, is on a whole ‘nother level.

The premiere kicked-off with a charming Wes Anderson-inspired montage that gave us a rare and funny glimpse of all the major characters starting their morning routines at home. Abed got meta from the start, Troy jumped outta bed wearing Spider-Man jammies (Oh, yes he did!), we got a peek at Pierce’s framed photo of a Fletch-era Pierce, we learned that Jeff is probably Batman, were reminded by a Charlie St. Cloud poster that Annie is still a teenager, and found out that Britta is actually a pretty cool chick because she likes the Pixies. We got all that – all that — in the first 30 seconds. This was a great episode, but, yeah, it was pretty cluttered from start to finish.

DVD and Blu-ray Weekly: ‘Community,’ ‘Bored to Death,’ ‘Human Target’ and More

It’s Tuesday! Time to eyeball the week’s notable new DVD and Blu-ray releases.

  • Community: The Complete First Season (DVD) – The funniest and most inventive comedy to premiere last fall promises to be even better this season. Catch up with season one’s insane paintball warfare, obsessive pottery sculpting, and chicken finger-stealing action. You won’t regret it.
  • Bored to Death: The Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-ray) The Internet lied and told me this came out last week. It didn’t. But it’s out now, so check it out if you like watching Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson acting like idiots and smoking a ton of pot (How could you not?).
  • Modern Family: The Complete First Season (DVD and Blu-ray) – Season one of Modern Family won me over with a string of laugh-out-loud funny episodes and its lovable, huggable Diet Arrested Development vibe.
  • Human Target: The Complete First Season – (DVD and Blu-ray) This geeky action show should have been awful, but it turned out to be pretty awesome. Mark Valley leads a cast that includes TV vet Chi McBride and a scene-stealing Jackie Earle Haley as creepy/cuddly killer Guerrero.
  • 30 Rock: Season Four (DVD) – 30 Rock is still one of the best and smartest shows on TV. Season four finds Liz Lemmon dealing with talk show stardom, meeting a sick and twisted James Franco and finding the man of her dreams, Matt Damon.
  • How I Met Your Mother: Season Five (DVD) – I’m told that the mother still hasn’t shown up, and that Ted continues his spiral down the dark pit of douche-baggery. So, yeah, this one’s your call.
  • Being Human: Season Two (DVD and Blu-ray) A mopey ghost, a troubled vampire and a nerdy werewolf living in the same house? What could possibly go wrong? Answer: Everything!

Linkables: Donald Glover, G.I. Joe Ninjas, ‘Mildred Pierce,’ Fruity Oaty Bars and More

Hey there, casual browser and/or DeathRay fan, let’s take a sec to devour some of the spectacular nerd TV-related stuff on the Internets this week …

  • Did you know that Communitys Donald Glover wrote a spec script for The Simpsons or that there’s a group of crazy nerds campaigning to get him to play Goldie Wilson in a Back to the Future musical? Learn about all that and more with a great Glover interview on the latest Nerdist podcast.
  • I know we posted about these yesterday, but here’s another link to the new Smallville teasers featuring the Super Suit and more goodies.
  • Tiny Entourage is so wrong and so boring and so unfunny that is has to be seen.
  • I love Todd Haynes movies, and I love the original Mildred Pierce flick, so, yes, I’m digging this trailer for the HBO update starring Kate Winslet.

Head back to TV DeathRay every Tuesday and Thursday for more Linkables.

- Long live the Dark Passenger! Michael C. Hall says that Showtime is likely to renew Dexter for a sixth season. “I don’t have the sense that there is any sense that this [is] the end of the story as we’re telling it,” he said. “I think signs point to us doing a sixth season, but it’s not official.” Plus, we get some new info on Julia Stiles’ new character. [E!]

- Eddie Izzard is heading back to TV. The UK comedian/actor/former Disco Boy has joined the cast of Showtime’s United States of Tara. [Deadline]
