Syfy Exec Talks ‘Caprica’ Cancelation on Twitter

Syfy exec Craig Engler took to Twitter earlier today to answer fan questions about the recent cancelation of the Battlestar Galactica prequel series  Caprica.

Engler took about an hour to explain what most of us already knew — the show’s live ratings were too low to justify a second season renewal. Still, the Q&A is worth a look. Not surprisingly, the Caprica fans are a pretty smart bunch, and they asked Engler some pretty tough and direct questions. Check out the Q&A below (or read the Twitter feed):

Engler: Getting a lot of questions and comments about #Caprica, naturally. Have put together some responses/answers for you all. Here you go:

Q) “You never liked the show and never wanted it to be a success”
A) We love #Caprica & spent years of effort creating and supporting the series to try and make it a success. We want all our shows to succeed.

TV DeathRay And Friends Talk ‘Caprica’ On Alpha Waves Radio

Nerds and fans of quality TV everywhere are hugging their toasters this week in mourning of Caprica, the latest primetime sci-fi show to get the axe in its first season. Our friend Michael Hinman from Airlock Alpha, who loved the show (almost) as much as I did, invited me on his live sci-fi talk show Alpha Waves Radio last night to chat about the series’ cancelation and about the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel Blood & Chrome.

Other guests on the show included Curt Wagner from Chicago Now’s Show Patrol and Joe Beaudoin Jr. from Battlestar Wiki. You can listen to or download the recording here or stream it below. I had a blast recording the show, and I hope you enjoy it.

‘Caprica,’ A Beautiful Mess, Is Canceled by Syfy

Syfy canceled the Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica yesterday afternoon. The news probably didn’t come as a shock to anyone who kept an eye on the show’s ratings over the past few weeks. To put it bluntly, Caprica was a ratings disaster, and it failed to repeat the critical success of its Peabody Award-winning predecessor. Syfy made a quick and cold business decision and immediately pulled the show from its schedule, promising to air the remaining episodes sometime next year.

I’m a little broken up about this news. Caprica was one of the most challenging and uncompromising shows on TV. It was a mess, of course, but it was a beautiful and ambitious mess. It was like a Soderbergh film – elegant, stylized, sad, angsty and rambling. But the series also delivered unexpected visceral moments, bizarre visual treats and biting social commentary. And robots! Who could forget the robots?

Linkables: The ‘Frak You!’ Edition

I’m skipping the usual nerd TV link roundup today to bring you a special Caprica edition of Linkables because, honestly, I’ve been busy with conference calls all day, and 2.) Caprica is frakkin’ awesomecakes!

Season 1.5 (seriously Syfy, enough with this breaking up the seasons crap already, geeez) premieres Oct. 5 with an episode directed by the great (and ginger) Eric Stoltz. It’s no secret that Caprica is one of our favorite shows here at TV DeathRay, and not just because it’s a Battlestar Galactica spinoff – in fact, I’d argue that anyone could enjoy Caprica without ever watching a single minute of BSG. And now, Syfy has released a great and funny video recap of the first half of season 1, so people who skipped out on the first several episodes can get caught up with the story in less than five minutes.

Head after the jump for Syfy’s Re-Caprica video and for a SPECIAL Caprica-related TREAT: A brilliant puppet parody of Cee Lo Green’s ‘F*ck You’ called ‘Frak You!’ posted on The Node by Clay Robeson. Enjoy!

Premiere Trailer Trifecta: ‘Smallville,’ ‘Caprica,’ and ‘Supernatural’

The fall premieres continue tonight with the return of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on FX. Were just as excited about seeing Charlie huff more spray paint as the next guy, but the date we’re really looking forward to Sept. 24 – that’s the night two of our favorite shows, Smallville and Supernatural, return to TV!

The TV gods will smile upon us again on Oct. 5, the night Caprica heads back to Syfy to wrap up its first season. Here’s hoping Syfy surprises everyone and gives the show a season 2 renewal. Caprica might not be the most popular show on the cable network, but it’s easily one of the best.

Head after the jump for a feast of new promos and trailers for Smallville, Supernatural and Caprica, and let us know: which fall premiere are you looking forward to the most?

The End is Nearer: ‘Caprica’ Returns to Syfy This October

Caprica showed a lot of promise during the first half of its freshman season. Much like Battlestar Galactica, the show’s first nine episodes offered a dark and uncompromising view of a culture gripped by fear and uncertainty and scrambling to protect the things that matter.

The show also introduced us to an amazing and ultra-stylized fantasy world where regular people could become super powered sci-fi gangsters, kingpins and mercenaries. Plus, it has robots! Killer robots!

So, yeah, I love the show, and I’m happy to hear that it’s heading back to Syfy a few months earlier than previously expected, Oct. 5 at 10 PM ET, to be exact. Head after the jump for more from Syfy about Caprica Season 1.5 and to view an awesomely violent sneak peek of the new season.

UPDATE: The season 1.5 premiere is directed by Daniel Graystone himself, Eric Stoltz! That’s a new shot of him working on the set up top.

Morning Blast: George Takei on ‘Big Bang,’ Plus ‘Caprica,’ ‘Chuck,’ and more

Lookin’ for a quick dose of nerdy TV news to spice up your breakfast? We’ve got ya covered …

- Wow! I never thought I would envy Howard Wolowitz, but oh how things have changed now that major sci-fi TV icons are lining up to hang with him. Star Trek‘s OG Sulu, George Takei, just signed to guest star on The Big Bang Theory this season. He’ll appear alongside Battlestar Galactica vet Katee Sackhoff as one half of Wolowitz’s conscience. Producers are also trying to get Evil Wil Wheaton back on the show. Sounds like a good year for the Big Bang. [TV Squad]

- Caprica returns to Syfy to wrap up the second half of its first season in January, but the network is still unsure if season two is in the cards. [Fancast]

- Here’s some better news: AMC has renewed The Walking Dead for a second season! The show premieres Halloween night. [IGN]

- Check out the first pics from the Chuck season four premiere featuring Linda Hamilton as Chuck’s big momma. [Spoiler TV]
