‘Sanctuary’ Season 3 Premiere Review: Keeping The Faith in ‘Kali’

So what’s in store for the third season of Sanctuary? Who the hell knows — we’ve got a three-parter to get through first!

We’ll save the “what’s to come” talk for next week. For now, let’s focus on the final hour of the ‘Kali’ three-parter … Will was on the verge of death, Bertha sent a massive tidal wave hurling toward the Sanctuary ship, and well … Wexford was a jackass! But we already knew that. The big question left by last season’s finale was: How are they all gonna survive?

Turns out the answer had a lot to do with faith. Magnus had faith throughout the premiere as well as conviction in her efforts to protect Bertha from Wexford, who had truly gone mad. No longer just power-hungry and controlling, he was Captain Ahab and Bertha was his White Whale, and nothing could stop his blind rage and hatred of the foul beast.

Only, it wasn’t a beast at all, but rather a powerful near-deity. A near-deity who looked like Shelob from Lord of the Rings on the outside, but the gorgeous Sahar Biniaz on the inside. I think I’d nearly die to spend some more time gazing at her beauty, as Will did in this premiere. Sure, he was doing it to convince her to stop the tsunami from taking more lives, but I’m sure there was a part of him that was just happy to look upon her again. He is a man, after all.

Will’s faith was wavering a little, as he didn’t believe he would come back, but Kate had enough faith for both of them. After more than eight minutes under, he was restored to life. Unfortunately, he doesn’t remember any of his time with Kali, which is disappointing for several reasons.

Henry had faith that Magnus was alive, which is why he immediately went to work sabotaging Wexford’s ongoing efforts to kill Bertha. Later, was more than ready to send Magnus the coordinates once he confirmed she was still breathing.

It was luck that Forsythe (Callum Blue) was nearby to fish her out of the water, and it was even more fortunate that the Macri spider inside of him had died, giving him a death sentence. He would have never become cooperative or even sacrificed himself as a decoy to Wexford’s mania had he thought he had a chance to live.

It’ll be interesting to see what happened to Bertha/Kali after Will was brought back to life, as she appeared severely injured and her cohorts in the dream-palace vanished. If Bertha was inactive, then who stopped the third wave? Does Will still share a connection to Kali or Bertha or the ancient forces of the world?

I’m hopeful all of these questions won’t get shoved aside now that Wexford has been deposed and Magnus is likely reinstated as the head of the Sanctuary Network. There are things left to be told about Bertha. Are there other creatures like her out there? If so, what if Kali is angry and feels betrayed by Will again? She could turn her vengeance on all of humanity.

Or, I suppose, the writers could have a whole new plan for the third season, they just needed to wrap up all those cliffhangers first. Either way, I’m sure we’re in for another season of surprises, thrills and solid entertainment. Ah, Sanctuary, you’re always just a little bit better than I remember. I should have had more faith in you.

  2. Good review. Even though I watched the episode, I somehow missed the point about “faith”, which was pretty clear throughout.

I guess it was appropriate the Forsythe die, but I really liked the character, even though he was a “bad guy”.

Loved Paul McGillion as Wexford; he was very good at being very bad.
